Dow Presents the 2008 PWT Mercury Challenge
Pro Anglers Return to Saginaw Bay for the first time Since 1991

Midland, MI - September 18, 2007

The Dow Chemical Company today announced that it will be the site sponsor of the 2008 Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) Mercury Championship May 16-18, 2008. The event will host the top 30 qualifiers in the Johnsonville Brats Angler of the Year Competition, as well as the top 20 in the Regional Series race.

Fishing will take place on the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay. The championship weigh-in, stage festivities, Sport Show, Outdoor Festival, youth interactive activities, and more will take place at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw. All events are free to the public.

“Saginaw Bay in May has a nice ring to it,” says Jim Kalkofen, In-Fisherman PWT executive director. “We will work closely with Dow, Travel Michigan, regional tourism councils and Convention and Visitors Bureaus to handle the media and fans who will attend.”

Previously-scheduled commitments will keep Mark Gwizdala, Dow employee and past Championship qualifier, from qualifying for the 2008 Championship. Therefore, he will chair local Championship activities.

“I’m pleased that the PWT Mercury Championship is coming back to the region,” says Gwizdala. “The event will bring national attention to the region and will highlight the outstanding fishery and resources we have in this part of the state.”

Championship week festivities are planned in Bay City, Midland, Saginaw and other local communities.

The area is rich in history and the outdoor-related pursuits have deep traditional roots among the 250,000 residents living in the area.

This will be the third time the Mercury Championship has been held on the Saginaw Bay, and the fourth time in 18 years that the Championship has been held on one of the Great Lakes.
